Forest School
Forest School is an opportunity that we offer all year groups; at various times throughout the year. In this time, we give the children the opportunity to try a range of outdoor activities which include team building exercises, tree climbing and navigation. This provides a wider PE offer to include both Physical and communication Skill development.
The Origins of Forest School
The idea of Forest Schools came from Scandinavia, where outdoor living is part of everyday life. The Scandinavian people believe that nature and movement are the key factors in development, and the children there spend at least one day a week outside, in all weathers. They are engaged in learning activities, harnessing the skills that involve respecting the environment whilst looking after themselves and others around them.
The Forest School initiative was born in the UK after a visit & study to Denmark in the 1990’s, by the Nursery Nursing Department at Bridgewater College, and is becoming an increasingly popular way of learning in an outdoor classroom.
At Catchgate Primary School, we are very fortunate to have a safe and accessible forest area in our own grounds and this will be used as our base for learning. An important part of Forest Schools is that children experience the outdoor environment in all weathers – with the exception of very high winds or thunder storms.
Activities are very much child initiated & led, and using the main curriculum, activities will be tailored to the age and ability. With traditional boundaries removed, the children are encouraged to set their own boundaries and be responsible for each other and their surroundings.
Forest Schools activities will teach children about:
- caring for, managing & understanding the woodland environment
- using different hand tools, starting with potato peelers
- creating a ‘camp’ fire and the associated safety aspects
- building a shelter using the materials we have available in the wood as well tarpaulins
- using a a Kelly Kettle to provide us with a warm drink
Forest School Aims:
- Promote self worth, esteem & independence
- Instill a sense of pride and an ‘I can’ attitude
- Encourage team work
- Develop vital communication & social skills
- Create a positive experience
Our Learning Journey 2024 - 2025
Our Fragile World - Autumn 2024
We worked on the following skills, such as fire safety. We observed and talked about fire lighting procedures and then contributed to selecting the correct fuel. We developed our knowledge of the three main elements to create fire. We also were able to name a wide range of Forest School tools, carefully used each different tool safely keeping myself and others safe and then applied the skills to create an object. We looked into the British Red Cross and then developed our First Aid Skills. We also looked at our planet and how we can protect it.

Build The World - Spring 2025
This term, we have been working on naming a wide range of shelters and then building a range of shelters using tarpaulin, paracord and natural resources. We have introduced knot skills. For the older children, we have worked on more complex knots to ensure the different shelters are safe and secure. We have finished the term by working on our navigation and directional language skills.

Living in the natural world - Summer 2025
This term we will be looking at being a Gardener within our school grounds, we will look at a wide variety of gardening tools and then gain the skills to use the tools in a safe manner. We will take pride and ownership of the school grounds by planting and then looking after flowers and wildlife. We will take our pride in our school environment into our community by doing litter picks. We will also have lots of fun making large scale art work, cooking on the fire and some pond dipping.
