Physical Education
Catchgate Primary School has a rich history of sporting success. We take part in a wide range of inter school sports organised by both our local associations and the local School Sport Partnership. We aim to provide as many opportunities as possible for children to be active and experience as many new sporting activities as possible during curriculum time and as part of after school clubs. We provide 2 hours of high quality Physical Education in all classes across the school as well as providing 30 minutes of physical activity throughout the school day through our POP playground programme.
In our school we have a weekly award for our pupils that is given to children each Friday in collective worship to celebrate their performances throughout any activity in school which is active. This could be for swimming, excelling in a P.E lesson, doing great in a class movement break or great outdoor active learning.
We organise whole school events across the year as in-school competitions, experience days, sporting events run by our Sports Leaders and Sports Days. A wide variety of after school clubs support our PE provision.
Please take a look at our PE overview and our progression of skills documents for each of the areas in PE:
Physical Education in EYFS
The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and carefully planned provision are designed to support children’s physical development. We offer daily playful opportunities for children to engage in physical activity both in and outdoors.
Our children have access to free flow play for sustained periods of time and are encouraged to use our large outdoor environment including our forest school, mud kitchen, play equipment and large sandpit. We access this environment all year round and in all weather conditions to support the development of gross and fine motor control, balance, coordination, confidence and problem solving skills.
We explore meditation, yoga, massage and relaxation techniques and share a range of healthy snacks to develop our understanding of the importance of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
Physical Education in KS1 and KS2.
Our curriculum is designed to cover units of work for every context of learning. They flow in a progressive and sequential order from EYFS to Key Stage 2, ensuring that we are always challenging learning. Planning supports high quality teaching and learning and success outcomes challenge and develop ‘The Whole Child’. Key Stage 1 units centre around developing strong Motor Competence which lead into Dance, Gymnastics, Games and OAA units which are taught and revisited across Year 3 – Year 6. Children from Year 3 to Year 6 access swimming lessons at a local pool.
Competitive Sport
This year we have partnered with Durham and Chester-le-Street School Sport Partnership (SSP). Through this partnership we have competed in numerous different sporting events from tag rugby to dance festivals.
The highlight of the year so far was seeing 20 of our children perform a dance routine on the stage at the Gala Theatre in Durham!
