Art and Design

It is our belief that all children should have access to an art and design curriculum which fosters a lifelong love and appreciation this subject. We strive to present children with a diverse range of experiences, so that they can experience art and design from different cultures and periods of historical significance. To do this we follow the KAPOW scheme of work.

We equip them with the skills required to have an understanding of the language of art and design. This enables them to describe what they see in detail and to provide evidence for their observations. Our curriculum ensures that children’s experiences of this subject, regardless of their special educational needs and/or disabilities, ability or background, will result in them being able to use the visual elements of art and design confidently, in their own work.

Our children have opportunities to work alongside professional artists, in exciting projects which enhance our whole school environment.

We offer extra-curricular experiences for our children; enabling them to get involved in art, craft and design based projects, which explore a wide variety of mediums.

Art and Design in EYFS

Through Expressive Arts children are encouraged to explore different media, explore how media can be combined to create different effects and develop a range of skills and techniques experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.

Children are given daily access to a range of creative opportunities and enjoy our carefully planned and well resourced creative areas both indoors and out. Children are encouraged to create on both small and large scales and our outdoor environment supports this well. Children are encouraged to develop their communication and language skills through talking about their creations and sharing these with others to build confidence and raise self-esteem.

Art and Design in KS1 and KS2

Across the primary Art curriculum, children learn about a range of artists and topics to build upon their skills every year. Please see below for further information about our Art curriculum and the progression of skills we teach in each area.
