Being with others, sharing and taking turns with toys, and talking to children about how they are feeling and why makes a big difference at school.
This week, talk about kind behaviours like sharing, turn-taking, and using friendly words. Practise saying “hello” or starting conversations in play – it builds confidence.

Can your child:
• Take part in imaginative play (e.g. role play)?
• Draw, paint, colour and stick?
• Share story books with caregivers, look at pictures and talk about the characters?
• Explore the world around them (e.g. looking closely at the natural world or playing safely with objects at home)?
Sharing books at home builds language and imagination.
This week, cuddle up with a favourite story, talk about what might happen next, or retell it in your own words. Encourage your child to choose books and tell you the story using the pictures!

Can your child independently:
• Put on / take off their coat and shoes?
• Use the toilet and wash their hands?
• Get dressed with little help, e.g. after using the toilet or doing PE?
• Use cutlery (e.g. fork and spoon, chopsticks) and drink from an open cup?
• Spend time away from you, learning they can be looked after by caring adults?
Mastering simple skills build confidence and make school feel less overwhelming.
•Growing independence – Encouraging children to manage tasks like using cutlery, putting on their coat, and using the toilet independently.
•Building relationships and communication – Developing social skills such as sharing, taking turns, and talking about feelings.
•Physical development – Ensuring children are active for at least three hours a day, can hold a pencil, and enjoy creative activities like drawing and painting.
•Healthy routines – Encouraging good habits such as brushing teeth twice a day and limiting screen time.
Over the summer, we’ll be sharing weekly tips to help your child feel confident and excited about starting Reception.
Find out what skills help children have a confident and successful start in Reception.

At 4.45pm she crossed the finished line at Wellfield School after a gruelling, very long ramble from Consett Academy, leaving at 7.00am this morning.
Covered in blisters, Claire's beaming smile and sunny disposition shines through as she is greeted by her girls at the end. ❤
Also - a wonderful snapshot of incoming Executive Head and Primary Director; whom quite frankly look like they have had a whale of a time!
Well done Claire and well done to everyone involved today. 🥰 44 Likes
